Mall Road & The Ridge — the classic Shimla evening

Shimla's heart is its pedestrian Mall: colonial façades, the Gaiety Theatre, Christ Church on the Ridge, wool shops and coffee houses. Private cars can't enter the Mall area — which is exactly why staying near ISBT with hotel parking works so well. Take a taxi to the lift or Victory Tunnel side, wander for the evening, and ride back after dinner.

Jakhu Temple — the hilltop Hanuman

At about 2,450 m, Jakhu is Shimla's highest point, crowned by a giant Hanuman statue you can spot from most of town. Drive up or take the ropeway from near the Ridge. Hold onto your caps and snacks — the resident monkeys are famously bold.

Viceregal Lodge — the Raj's summer capital

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study occupies the magnificent Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill, where India's partition talks were held. The Scottish-baronial building and its lawns are a short drive from the hotel and one of Shimla's most photogenic corners.

Kufri — snow & adventure day-trip

Twenty-odd kilometres up the Hindustan–Tibet road, Kufri is Shimla's adventure playground: snow play in winter, horse and yak rides to Mahasu Peak, and huge Himalayan panoramas on clear days. Start early, carry layers, and combine it with Mashobra or Naldehra on the way back.

Quieter corners — Annandale, Summer Hill, Tara Devi

For a slower day: Annandale's meadow and Army Heritage Museum, the university forests of Summer Hill, Chadwick Falls after the monsoon, and the serene hilltop Tara Devi temple — all within a short taxi ride, all mercifully free of crowds.
